Whether ve if arasında bazı kullanım farklılıkları vardır:
1. Or not, whether’dan hemen sonra kullanılabilir ancak if’ten hemen sonra gelemez. Or not, if ile if…or
not şeklinde kullanılır.
2. Preposition’dan sonra sadece whether kullanılır.
3. If cümle başında (özne pozisyonunda) kullanılamaz.
- Is John listening to music now?
- John şu an müzik mi dinliyor?
- I don’t know whether Jack is listening to music or not.
whether or not Jack is listening to music.
whether Jack is listening to music.
if Jack is listening to music or not.
if Jack is listening to music.
Jack’in müzik dinleyip dinlemediğini bilmiyorum.

Not: Koşul gruplarında kullanılan whether or not (yapsa da yapmasa da) ile isim cümleciklerinde
kullandığımız whether…or not (yapıp yapmadığı) arasındaki kullanım farklarına dikkat etmemiz
gerekir:
1. Koşul cümlelerindeki whether …or not yapısında or not cümleden atılamaz.
2. Koşul cümlelerinde kullandığımız whether … or not… yapısında cümle, if grubu bağlaçları kurallarına
göre kurulur. Bu nedenle koşul whether … or not’ında, whether’lı kısımda will ve türevleri kullanılamaz.
3. Noun clause, bir cümlede özne ya da nesne görevinde kullanılır. Koşul grubu yapısı whether… or
not… ise cümleleri birbirine bağlayan bağlaç görevinde kullanılır.
I will not help her whether she asks me or not.
(Type 1 koşul cümleciği)
Benden istese de istemese de ona yardım etmeyeceğim.
I don’t know whether she will ask me (or not).
(Nesne konumunda noun clause)
Benden talep edip etmeyeceğini bilmiyorum.
Whether you pay in advance or not, you can’t book a room right now.
(Type 1 koşul cümleciği)
Önceden ödeseniz de ödemeseniz de odayı şu an ayırtamazsınız.
I was curious about whether they could pay me in advance (or not).
(Nesne konumunda noun clause)
